Watch the Scrubs musical, which we've seen about 9,382 times. This is Jaycie & Max's favorite song:
Why be a parent -- or a cousin, or an aunt, or an uncle -- if not to exploit children for blog content? Kids are hilarious and surprisingly insightful. (Maggie Mason, Nobody Cares What You Had for Lunch, page 5)
This is perfect for today, since today is the 10th birthday of Princess Jaycie.
Jodi: You know it’s awfully hard to type with you on my lap.
Jaycie: Haha, that’s funny.
Jodi: So what are we gonna do today?
Jaycie: I don’t know.
Jodi: What do you want to do today?
Jaycie: Make crafts
Max: Eat lunch all day, that’d be funny.
Jodi: What else should we talk about?
Jaycie: I’m thinking.
Max (who is using the typewriter): How do you rerase it?
Jodi: You can’t erase it.
Jaycie: You can on a computer.
Jaycie: We could make a frame today.
Jaycie: Look Aunt Jodi I have mismatched earrings
Jodi: A flower and a star.
Jaycie: That’s because the other one fell off this morning.
Max: Aunt Jodi what are these slides for?
Jodi: What slides?
Max: These.
Jodi: I dunno I haven’t figured it out yet.
Jaycie: Is it my turn yet Aunt Jodi?
Max: I think I have to type my name first
Jodi: let him type his name.
Jaycie: it’s my turn now
Max: I’m bored now. Now that it’s Jaycie’s turn I’m bored. Sometimes I get a
little grumpy when I’m hungry and I’m hungry. Aunt Jodi can I play with some
string? String away, string away.
Jodi: Sure, go ahead.
Max: Hey look Aunt Jodi, I’m the king. You are a very sick Aunt Jodi. Look I
have a yarn purse, look I have a yoyo.
Jaycie: You can type at the same time on the computer, you can’t on this
thing.
Jodi: Huh?
Jaycie: See how you are typing at the same time, it’s all fast at the same
time. You can’t do that on this thing. What’s it called?
Jodi: A typewriter.
Jaycie: How do you spell dot?
Jodi: D
Jaycie: No, no, no like dot com
Jodi: You want to make a dot?
Jaycie: No, I want to spell the word
Max: Like www dot com?
Jaycie: I’ll figure it out myself.
Max: Look Aunt Jodi it’s a giant scary monster
Jaycie: The computer always works, it doesn’t always run out of ink like this
thing. And the computer uses the screen and not paper. And this thing, it
doesn’t even have a mouse.
Jaycie: Where’s the number one, there’s only a number two.
Jodi: They only have an I, in the olden days they didn’t have a one yet.
Jaycie: Oh. We have 1s now. That’s why it looks so silly.
Max: You are a very sick Aunt Jodi
Jodi: Why am I sick?
Max: It’s funny, isn’t it?
Max: You are a very sick Aunt Jodi.
Jodi: Why?
Max: Because someone has to be a very sick Aunt Jodi. Do you love how I say
that? Someone is a very sick Aunt Jodi.
Jaycie: Do you hate when he says that? Is it mean?
Jodi: I don’t know if I hate it, I don’t get it.
Max: Aunt Jodi are you ever gonna take out this yellow [he hands me a yellow
skein of yarn]
Jodi: No, not ever.
Max: why not?
Jodi: Because I’m a very sick Aunt Jodi.

Jaycie is the eldest of my niece and nephews. I never knew how much I could love someone until she came into the world. The actual physical feeling I get in my heart when I think of any of the kidlings is different then it is when I'm not thinking about them. I guess when I'm not thinking about them, I don't feel my heart. It's just there dormant in my chest. But when I think of Jaycie, Max, Cade, Nolan, or Liam it's like I can feel them in the middle of my chest. It feels lighter and happier. Words cannot explain it.
I cannot even imagine the quantity of love a person would have for their own children. The weight seems as though it would be unbearable.
I'm refusing to answer the question of the day. The world is filled with so much terror and sadness already, I have no need to relive it, to delve back into that dark day. Instead, I will think about love and how life can be and is goodness.
